So if you don't know what Golden week is, it is a collection of four national holidays within seven days. In combination with well placed weekends, the Golden Week becomes one of Japan's three busiest holiday seasons. People typically use this week off to travel, relax, or travel! Yes I said Travel twice! there is a lot of traveling going on(and I am one of them). So expect delays, traffic, and most people taking advantage of this time off. Here is some tips that I learned. On top of airports being crowded, they are expensive during peak times(no surprise there). However, if you want to get away further than a local train away, then I suggest Shinkansen (aka. Bullet train). Yes they take longer than airplanes, but worth it! The fares stay the same (no peak season), the seats are wider, no security to go through, and better views. Because of the peak time of golden week, I say get a Reserved seat. The bullet train stops at limited/main stations. So if you are standing, expect to stand for one hour before the next station. Then they also have GREEN seats. Which are wider seats. You do have to pay extra for Reserved and Green seats.
