Start Planning

My plan is to go a few days early to see my family before I start school. Things I am thinking about are things that are hard to get in Japan, the weather, business, and professional opportunities, omiyage and who will I encounter, and wondering what my schedule will look like. I will try to post pics later of how I pack and what I bring. Let me know if there is anything that you want to know or learn about.

Waiting for my visa, getting your airplane tickets, the housing arranged, how to get to your housing is all something that has to be worked out on your own. I used H.I.S. to book my tickets. They have access to tickets that might not be available or more expensive to the public. Plus you can take advantage of their lounge. The downside is that of course, you have to pay their fees. But I think it is worth it because they can help arrange and provide information about other aspects too. Such as a list of all the flights, rail pass(only if you have a tourist visa), and limousine bus (cheaper alternative than a taxi).

  It's show time

The hardest thing for myself when I go to Japan is packing everything you need. A semester abroad if hard in my opinion. For myself, it is not a short duration, and it is not a long one either. For me, I like to try to bring my gym stuff, because most times the schools will allow you to use their facilities. If you have downtime, the gym is a great way to take a break from studying and get active. But depending on your types of workouts and goals, that sometimes means you are bringing more or less than others.

Another challenging thing when getting ready to study abroad or a trip to Japan is Omiyage. Everyone tells you to do your research, especially if you haven't been there before. But when going to Japan, it is customary to bring Omiyage(gifts) from your hometown. So if you see friends, family, or want to give it as a parting or thank you gift, I would bring a lot. Since Japan doesn't have a tipping culture and giving tips are considered rude(because that is their job and a tip would be a way of looking down on them or interpreted as you being sorry for them). But if you just give them chocolate covered macadamia nuts, I mean who can refuse those.
